Senators offer latest bill aimed at college sports, NIL reform
A bipartisan draft legislation proposes a uniform national law for college athletes to make money from their names, images, and likenesses (NIL).
The legislation aims to make college athletics fairer, safer, and more just by requiring transparency about school finances and providing health care benefits for athletes.
The proposed bill suggests creating a non-government-operated corporation, the College Athletic Corporation, to settle NIL disputes, certify agents, and enforce other reforms.
It calls for the establishment of a medical trust fund for sports-related injuries and requires athletic departments to cover medical expenses for athletes for a certain period based on revenue generation.
The bill includes provisions for draft eligibility, scholarship guarantees, education on financial literacy, and transparency requirements for schools regarding athletics revenue, expenses, and endorsement contracts.
